Branding is what sets your organization apart from others like it. Branding is more than just a logo, it encompasses printed and digital collateral like ads, banners and business cards, as well as promotional items featuring those logos or messaging. Nontangible things also contribute to branding: the tone of social media posts, colors used in everything from logo to shirts to office throw pillows, even what representatives say when they answer the phone.

Advertising is any type of paid message, on traditional or digital media, produced by an organization to influence and inform people. With strategic use of your advertising dollars, and ads that utilize well-designed branding, an advertising campaign can have far more reach and impact.

Public relations, unlike advertising, is messaging that relies on unpaid means of distribution. When your organization has newsworthy stories to tell, the way to get these in front of journalists is with press releases, media advisories and targeted pitches to members of the media. Public relations is, at its heart, connecting the right people — industry journalists, local TV reporters or niche podcast hosts — who can help tell your story. Public relations can also be crafting company newsletters, social media posts, nominations for industry awards, community statements and much more.
